STERLING AIRWAYSCONTRIBUTION BY CHRISTIAN FUNCH (DENMARK) email: damdog@post.tele.dk Sterling Airwyas was founded in May 1962 and began charter flights with some ex. Swissair DC6Bīs. in 1964 a jet aircrafts was need and the Caravelles 10B3 was found to be the best available. Consequently the airline introduced it the following year on charter flights to Europe, Middle East and Africa. Subsequent orders brought the airline Caravelles fleet to 12 series, 10B3 series and two 10R aircrafts. In December 1971 a Sterling 10B became the first Caravelle to cross the Atlantic with cormercial payload, when it flew from Oslo to Gander with 99 passengers, a distance of 4200km/2650Miles in 5 hours and 33 minuttes, thus inaugurating a series of charter flights to North America.
Same year Sterling Airways had taken delivery of the first 13 Caravelles 6R it had purchased from United Airlines. Although some were quickly sold or leased out, the 6R formed the bulk of Sterlingīs medium range fleet for European services until they were retired in the mid seventies. In 1968 Sterling had worked closely with Sud Aviation to produce the series 12 variant, and the following year it ordered 11 Caravelles 12s, but later reduced the order to seven. In order to increase the range of the aircraft the maximum take-off weight reached 58 tons and the aircrafts were unofficially named Caravelles 12Bs. Sterling operated a total of 34 Caravelles (not all at the same time) and was the second largest operator after Air France. List of Caravelles operated by STERLING AIRWAYS REG. C/N TYPE
