SATA operated up to five Caravelles and three DC-8s in their best time, including 1967-built HB-ICQ, which was acquired from UTA in November 1972. After one of the Caravelles crashed on approach to Funchal in December 1977, the carrier got into financial troubles, and was finally wound down in late 1978. The Caravelles were transferred to new company CTA, which was formed out of the remains of SATA. HB-ICQ continued to fly for CTA until 1987, when it was sold to Istanbul Airlines as TC-ASA. In 1991 it was withdrawn from use and used for spares at Ercan, Cyprus.
